But VIII is more accessible and a good way to ease into the series. I feel VII is the game that must be finished and then leave it at that but you wanna keep playing VIII because the characters are so lovable and story voice acting are so nice. I feel in VIII battle strategies are put to good use.

While VIII does have some smaller references to previous games (like the new Superboss, or two certain team owners from rank S of the monster arena), you don't need to play any other Dragon Quest at all to understand what is going on.
