Microsoft Word 2016 is available for free with an Office 365 subscription. You can sign up for an Office 365 subscription from the Microsoft website. Once you have signed up, you will be able to log into your account and download the software for free.

You won't be able to get Office 2016 or 2019 from Microsoft because the current perpetual-license version is Office 2021. If you buy from a third party, make sure you get a legal copy--not an OEM version or something Professional Plus, which is a volume license that is not legal for individuals.

Despite being discontinued, Office 2016 is still a viable option for those who want Microsoft Office, but don't want to pay monthly or yearly for a subscription to Office 365. We have both Office 2016 and 2019 and have found very minimal differences between the two.

Open any Office app, such as Word, and create a new document. Go to File > Account (or Office Account if you opened Outlook). Under Product Information, choose Update Options > Update Now. Note: You may need to click Enable Updates first if you don't see the Update Now option right away.

While you can download Office 2021, 2019, and Office 2016 for free from Microsoft, you need to own a license key or have a Microsoft 365 subscription to actually use the programs within. As such, you might want to consider a free Office alternative, of which there are plenty.
