Limiting a charge works because phone batteries hate being completely full or empty, and they are also damaged when charging over 80 percent while hot. This is why fast chargers dump power into a battery up to 80 percent and then slow to a trickle for the final 20 percent.
If your system has Power Management Options, select Battery Health Manager > Maximize my battery health. This setting will maximize the battery health by lowering the maximum battery charge level to 80%.
With iPhone 14 models and earlier, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and turn off Optimized Battery Charging. With iPhone 15 models, to choose between Optimized Battery Charging, 80% Limit, and None, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging > Charging Optimization and choose an option.
If enabled on your phone Settings → Battery → Battery Health , it will charge only to 80% and will display a notification with option to force charge to 100%.
But that's not true. According to the 40-80 Rule, lithium-ion batteries, like the ones inside iPhones, work best when they are between 40% and 80% of their capacity. When they are too full or too low, they experience more wear and lose their ability to hold a charge over time.
