This focal length is good for portraits, and the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens makes a good portrait lens - excelling at head and head/shoulders portraits when mounted on a 1.3x or 1.6x FOVCF body. The wide f/1.8 aperture can create a dreamy OOF (Out of Focus) background blur.
This 85/1.2 has no Optical Image Stabilization, but it does work with the in-body, sensor-shift stabilization of cameras like the EOS R5.
The Canon 85mm f/1.8 exhibits significantly better Chromatic Aberration performance for the wider apertures, f/1.8 and f/2. But for apertures f/4-f/22, the 50mm lens is a significantly better CA performer than the 85mm.
The Sigma has a rear focus element whereas the Canon has a front focus element. The Canon's bokeh was a little softer and creamier than the Sigma's. The Canon's colors were a little warmer straight out of the camera. The Sigma had less lens flare (which could be a good or bad thing depending on your artistic tastes)
You have the ability to fully focus on your subject. The 50mm lens has a shallow depth of field, so it helps you do that. The 85mm, on the other hand, allows you to take your mind off the background and put your subject in the center of the composition to which the viewer's attention will be drawn.
